Bio:

Dr. Joyce T Mphande-Finn is an Associate Professor at Montana State University-Northern. She earned her Doctor of Education (EdD) in Counselor Education and Supervision from University of Montana. She is a licensed clinical mental health counselor in both Montana (LCPC) and in the state of Washington (LMHC), a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and an Approved Clinical Supervisor. Dr. Mphande-Finn has almost 20 years of clinical counseling experience in various settings including community mental health agencies, in private practice, in school settings, and as a crisis counselor. She has conducted trainings on integrating services including Substance Abuse, Mental Health, and chronic illnesses such as HIV/AIDS Treatment. In 2005, she was awarded the Governor’s World AIDS Day Recognition Award for her work at state and local level in this area. She is certified in trauma treatment, sex offender treatment, and is an IMPACT-certified Problem-solving Treatment of Depression practitioner, trained through University of Washington. Her research interests include looking at HIV/AIDS’ impact on the Social Support Structure (Extended Family Systems), especially in developing countries; Perspectives on multicultural issues in higher education; Social Justice Teaching in Counselor Education Programs; Gender and women issues; and effects of trauma in women / children exposed to domestic violence. Joyce has published in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Counseling & Development and Journal of Community Psychology. She has contributed chapters in books: Social Class and The Helping Professions: A Clinician’s Guide to Navigating the Landscape of Class in America; and, Supporting the Success of Adult and Online Students: Proven Practices in Higher education.
