Benefits Information for Classified Employees


Earn 10 hours per month.
Leave available for use after 6 months, with supervisor approval.
Four levels of vacation accrual:

  10 hours/month 1-10 years
  12 hours/month 10-15 years
  14 hours/month 15-20 years
  16 hours/month over 20 years

Balance can be double what you earn in a calendar year, if excess must use by March 31st.
Upon leaving MSUN, paid out for all of available leave balance.
If less than 1.00 FTE – See AFSCME contract.

Sick Leave

Earn 8 hours per month.
Leave available for use after 90 days, with supervisor approval.
Sick leave can be used for the employee and the employee’s immediate family.
No limit on accumulated balance.
Upon leaving MSUN, paid out for ¼ of available leave balance.
If less than 1.00 FTE – See AFSCME contract.


MSU-Northern Holidays
Follows applicable Board of Regents policies (Policies 708.1.1, 801.5).


Monthly payroll.
Payday is on the 11th of each month, unless that date is a weekend, then it’s the Friday before.

Insurance Plan

Employer contributes dollar amount, allows the employee to select the options that best fit their situation.

Total of the above options less the Employer Contribution is the Before Tax Cost to the employee.

Classified staff participate in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS).
Employee contributes 7.9% of gross pay.
Employer contributes 8.37% of gross pay.
Employee has option between:
   Defined Benefit—Retirement based on pay for final three years of work.
   Defined Contribution—Allows employee to select the allocation of their investments.

Union and Dues

Classified staff are members of AFSCME.
Dues are $40.05 per month, paid 12 months of the year.
Dues are prorated for employees who are less than full time.

Tuition Waivers

Classified staff can receive a waiver of tuition for any university system classes taken while employed at MSUN. The tuition waiver is for up to 6 credit hours per semester. Forms are available online, in the Human Resources Office or in Business Services.
