Student Excellence Awards 2006
Christy Baker of Harlem plans to graduate in December of 2006 with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Business Education. She is the daughter of Dean and Rhonda Baker. Upon graduation,
Christy hopes to pursue a position as a Junior High or High School Business Teacher
along the hi-line. She also would like to continue as a cheerleading coach for either
Northern or the school where she will be teaching. While at Northern, she has been
very active in the success of the Northern cheerleading squad. Christy was a cheerleader
for three years, a cheerleading co-captain and most recently Cheerleading Advisor/Coach.
Christy has also donated her time to assist with new student orientation and various
other campus clubs. Christy has been a student worker in the Financial Aid office
for four years.
Cheree Bekker of Great Falls will graduate from Northern in May of 2006 with a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Reading. Cheree is married to David
Bekker. When she graduates, Cheree plans to obtain an elementary teaching position.
While at Northern, Cheree has been active in the Student Education Association serving
as Vice President. Cheree has volunteered many hours working with the youth in Havre.
She has been a classroom volunteer at Lincoln-McKinley primary school, a tutor for
America Reads Reading program at Sunnyside Intermediate School, and a tutor volunteer
at the Boys and Girls club of the Hi-Line. She also assisted with the Havre Public
Schools kindergarten registration in the spring of 2005. Through all of this, Cheree
has maintained a 4.0 grade point average.
Megan Cail, a graduate of Helena High School, will graduate from Northern in the Spring of 2006
with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering Technology and Design Drafting
Technology. Megan is the daughter of Timothy and Dorothy Cail of East Helena. After
graduation, she plans to take and pass the Fundamental Engineer exam, after which
she will establish a career in the civil engineering field. Megan has ambitions to
eventually sit for the Professional Engineer exam and become a professional engineer.
Along with excelling in her academic programs, Megan has been very active in various
clubs, CET, IEEE, SkillsUSA and ADDA. She has been instrumental in the revitalization
of Morgan Hall this past year in her position as Resident Director. Megan also has
spent time helping her fellow students as an informal tutor.
Rebecca Geranios of Havre graduates in May with an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing. She is married
to James Geranois and is the mother of seven children. After receiving her degree,
Rebecca plans on returning to Northern to work on her BSN degree. Rebecca has been
a very active member of the Nursing Club by helping with fund raising events and service
projects around campus. She has been a member of the Student Health Advisory Board
for the past year and has been a key member in planning the nursing students' pinning
ceremony. While pursing her degree in nursing, Rebecca has maintained a 4.0 grade
point average.
Ophelia Gustafson of Rudyard plans to graduate in May 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal
Studies and a minor in Native American Studies. She is the wife of Willard Gustafson.
After graduation, Ophelia would like to teach Spanish/History and English at local
schools. Ophelia has served as the President of the Veteran's club on campus, Secretary
of the Rudyard Historical Society, as a volunteer "reader" at the Senior Citizens
center, and as a volunteer teacher for self-defense for women. She also has worked
as a tutor for Student Support Services. Ophelia is currently in the Air National
Guard and had been stationed in Great Falls. She has continued her academic excellence
by maintaining a grade point average of 4.0.
Dan Hartman of Minneiska, Minnesota, will graduate in December of 2006 with a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Agricultural Operations Technology and an Associate of Applied Science Degree
in Diesel Technology and Agricultural Mechanics. Dan is the son of John and Jane Hartmann.
After graduation, he plans to pursue a career in agricultural crop consulting with
either the USDA or the private sector. Dan has been a very active student on the MSU-Northern
campus participating in various campus clubs such as: Student Senate (Freshman Senator,
Senator at Large and Student Senate President), SkillsUSA (club President), and the
PAS Post Secondary Agricultural Club (Parliamentarian). Dan volunteers at the Boys
and Girls Club of the High Line and the Havre Soup Kitchen. He has also been an active
member of the Havre Rifle & Pistol club.
Nick Johnson of Havre will graduate in May of 2006 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Automotive
Technology and Diesel Technology and an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Agricultural
Mechanics Technology. He is the son of Kevin and Lorraine Johnson. Nick has been active
in SkillsUSA, formerly known as VICA. He has served as the local club's Vice President
and as the Parliamentarian for the state SkillsUSA organization. Nick won the state
postsecondary automotive competition and the National automotive competition last
year. He is undecided at this time as to his future plans as he has worked for several
different companies through Northern's Cooperative education program.
Megan May of Great Falls plans to graduate in May of 2006 with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Elementary Education and a minor in Reading. She is the daughter of Collen Paduano.
After graduation, Megan will be pursuing an elementary teaching position in the Great
Falls area. She also plans to begin working on her Master's Degree next summer and
receive a Doctoral Degree by the year 2021. She was instrumental in the formation
of the Great Falls chapter of the Student Education Association. Megan has served
in both the positions of vice-president and president. She organized in a coat drive
the past two years on behalf of the Great Falls SEA chapter.
Kirbi Siewing of Saco will graduate in May 2006 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural
Operations Technology with a minor in Applied Agriculture and an Associate of Science
Degree in Business Technology. She is the daughter of David & Dori Siewing of Saco.
After graduation Kirbi plans to start a career in a Montana Agri-Business field. She
has been an active member for the past several years in the Post-Secondary Agriculture
Club (PAS). As a member of PAS she has attended the past two national conferences.
Last year, while attending the national conference in Albany, New York, she and her
team mate placed 4th in the Soils contest. Kirbi has been a student worker in the
Admissions Office since her freshman year at Northern.
Pathe Yatera of Emerainville, France will earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Information
Systems in May of 2006. He is the son of Mariah and Lassana Yatera. Pathe is a member
of the Northern Lights basketball team. Upon graduation, he would like to pursue a
career in basketball playing for the pro team Paris Saint Germain. A long term goal
for Pathe is to obtain an international job as a web designer, preferably as a web
designer for his favorite pro team, Paris Saint Germain. Some of Pathe's volunteer
activities have included the Havre Elf food drive, community Thanksgiving meal, and
reading to elementary students in Havre. He has been one of the most reliable food
service workers over the past two years at MSU-Northern.
