Student Excellence Awards 2007
Matthew Anderson of Centralia, Washington plans to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Diesel Technology. He is the son of Robert and Lori Anderson. Upon graduation,
Matt plans to travel the world with a job as a ship engine mechanic and to build his
dream home in Washington. Prior to transferring to Northern, Matt attended Centralia
Community College and was active in the Diesel club. He has been active in the on
campus residential community, as both a Resident Assistant and then as the Resident
Director of Morgan Hall.
Joy Barsotti of Crane, Montana will graduate from Northern in May with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Biology. She is the wife of Michael Barsotti and has one son. When she graduates,
Joy would like to work in the field of Biology as a technician, specifically in the
area of environmental science. Ultimately, Joy would like to continue her education
and earn a Master's degree in Biology with an emphasis in Earth Sciences. While attending
Northern, Joy worked at the Northern pool as swimming instructor, life guard and as
an aqua aerobics instructor. She was also active in the Math and Science club and
had served as club president. During the summer of 2007, Joy was the main organizer
for the Math and Science club's scone booth at the Great Northern fair.
Leo Bullchild of Browning will graduate in December of 2007 with Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary
Education Social Science Broadfield. Leo is married to Karis Jackson and the father
of two children Latrell and Mecca. After receiving his Bachelors degree, he plans
to continue his education and work towards a Master's Degree in Counseling. Along
with excelling in academics, Leo has been a four year member of the Northern Lights
Basketball team and served this past year as a co-captain. He has been an active member
of the Sweet Grass Society here on the Northern Campus.
Allison Flynn of Helena will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Design Drafting
Technology and a minor in Civil Engineering Technology. She is the daughter of Dennis
and Nancy Shalsky and is married to Conrad Flynn. As a student Allison currently has
a 3.99 GPA. This May, Allison and husband Conrad are planning on going on a mission
in Limerick Ireland with the Assembly of God missionaries. She has been active in
Northern Christian Fellowship (NCF) the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA)
club here at Northern. In NCF Allison has been the club secretary, bible study leader,
prayer meeting leader and a part of the worship team. As a member of ADDA club Allison
has held leadership positions as Treasurer and Vice President. She has also been a
very reliable tutor as she is in fourth year of tutoring for the Student Support Services
program.
Jennifer Gorder of Havre will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design and
a minor in Marketing. She is the daughter of Chris and Kathy Gorder of Havre. At this
time Jennifer plans to move to Missoula and get a job in the graphic design field.
She has been an active member of the Student Senate for the past three years. One
year as a Student Senator and the past two years as the Program Council Coordinator.
Many of the student activities that have been held on the Northern campus the past
two years have been held due to her hard work and dedication. These activities have
included; musicians, dances, hypnotists, comedians and medieval dinners to name a
few.
Monty Harrison of Kevin, Montana will graduate in May of 2008 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Secondary Education Business Education and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Technology. Monty is married to Dorothy Harrison also of Kevin. While attending Northern,
Monty has been a volunteer tutor for the Student Support Services program for the
past two years. He has been active in the campus club Students in Free Enterprise
(SIFE). As a member of the Northern SIFE club, Monty has held the offices of Chief
Financial Officer and Chief Executive Officer. The past two years Monty has received
the SIFE Leadership award for which a student may receive each year for contributing
100 hours (or more) of service to the club. Upon graduating, Monty's goal is to teach
with both of his children who are Northern Alum.
Joy Linn of Saco will graduate in May with an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing. Joy hopes
to work at the Francis Mahon Deaconess Hospital as a RN and return to Stat Air Ambulance
as a Flight Nurse. She then hopes to continue on to earn her BSN degree and then become
either a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant. She is the daughter of Orlie
and Pamela Linn of Saco. Joy has worked as Lab/Teacher Assistant for Anatomy and Physiology,
a Nursing tutor and she worked in the Vande Bogart Library. She was instrumental in
starting a memorial endowment scholarship in memory of Patti Fisher. In addition to
being active in the Nursing Club, Joy has been active in her community of Saco while
being a student. These include, but have not been limited to, the Glasgow Soroptomist,
the VFW Auxiliary, Saco Fire Department, American Red Cross, a 911 dispatcher and
as a Safe Sitter Instructor.
Starlaen Perkins of Broadus, Montana plans to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Community
Service and a minor in Communications. She is the daughter of Glenn and LaVern Perkins
of Havre and is the mother of five children. After graduation, Starlaen's goals include
continuing her education and to be an advocate for her children & other families who
have special needs children. She has been active on campus in the Community Involvement
Association (CIA) and held the leadership position of club secretary. Starlaen has
been active in the community by implementing a family support group for families and
caregivers with special needs, contributing to the implementation of the Kids Management
Authority (KMA) for the Hi-line and advocating at Shodair Hospital for parents and
their children that have been newly diagnosed as special needs children.
Kyle Samson of Helena will graduate in May 2008 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary
Education: Health and Physical Education. He is the son of Mark and Kellie Samson.
Kyle's career goals include becoming a teacher and a football coach and ultimately
becoming a head coach at an NCAA division I school. He has been a member of the Northern
Lights football team the past three years as the starting quarterback. Kyle's football
awards include; three time all conference selection, three time academic all conference
selection and the 2007 Frontier Conference offensive player of the year. He currently
holds 21 Northern football records. Kyle has also been active off the football field
by participating in a mentoring program at Highland Park Elementary School, assisting
in youth sports programs at the Boys and Girls Club and as a participant in the "Read
Well" program in the Havre elementary schools.
Brooke Schwan of Havre will earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in December
2007. She is the daughter of Dusty and Patti Schwan of Havre. Upon graduation, Brooke
would like to teach elementary school. She currently is sporting a 4.0 Grade Point
Average. Brooke has been active in a variety of campus and community activities that
have included; volunteer assistant basketball coach for 8th grade students, Relay
for Life team member, the ELF food drive, youth group leader for St. Jude's Parish,
various intramural sports here at Northern and as a tutor in Student Support Services.
Kylee Starr of Malta will graduate in December of 2008 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
She is the daughter of Curtis Starr and recently became engaged to Shane Dellwo of
Choteau. Kylee received her Associate of Science Degree in Nursing in May of 2007
and then past her Nursing State Board exam shortly there after. Her goals include
furthering her nursing career and getting her RN first assistant certificate and developing
her skills as a surgical nurse. Kylee has been active in the community and the MSU-Northern
campus by being involved with the Northern Nursing club, as a member of the Skylights
basketball team, active in her church and is currently a member of the Montana Nursing
Association.
