Student Excellence Awards 2008
Tolan Allen of Fort Benton, Montana plans to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Drafting Technology, and two Associate of Applied Science degrees, one in Drafting
Technology and one in Civil Engineering Technology. Tolan is the son of Terry and
Roxanna Allen. Upon graduation, he would like to work around Havre for several years
and then work in Africa for a few years before returning to Montana. Upon returning
to Montana, Tolan would like also to farm. This past year he has been active on the
Student Senate as their Media Council Coordinator and working with the Northerner
yearbook and the Northern Light newspaper. Tolan has been very active in the American
Drafting Design Association's Northern branch and has held the positions of member,
Secretary, and President.
Chad Arnson of Clinton, Montana will graduate from Northern in May with two Bachelor of Science
Degrees one in Diesel Technology and one in Automotive Technology. He is the son of
Robert and Mikie Arnson and the fiancée of Stephanie Bortz. When he graduates, Chad
would like to further his career in the diesel and automotive fields in Montana. Chad
would also like to get his teaching certificate so he can become a high school teacher
or a college instructor. While attending Northern, Chad has been an active member
of SkillsUSA holding the offices of State Parliamentarian and State President.
Amy Sue Barclay of Scobey, Montana will graduate in May with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic
Design and a minor in Business Technology. She is the daughter of Sue-Ellen Barclay
of Bemidji, Minnesota. At this time Amy plans to move to Billings and get a job at
a sign company. She also plans to continue to do freelance art and in the future to
own her own business in Billings. Amy has been active in the on-campus residential
community, as both as a resident and as a Resident Assistant. She was instrumental
in a wide array of residence hall activities that included: casino night, wall climbing
and a variety of learning programs. Amy has also had her work exhibited in the annual
art exhibition here on campus.
Lindsey Krause of Fort Benton, Montana will graduate in May of 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree
in Graphic Design and a minor in Marketing. She is the daughter of Dale and Lorna
Krause. While attending Northern, Lindsey has maintained a 4.0 grade point average.
She has been active as a cheerleader for the past three years. Lindsey has also worked
on the Northern Light newspaper. Earlier this year Lindsey was a Great Falls Advertising
Federation "Addy Award" winner, receiving both a silver award and a bronze award for
her submissions. Upon graduating she would like to go out of state and use her graphic
design degree. Eventually she would like to open her own design studio and teach art/graphic
design.
Kristiny Lorett of McAllen, Texas will graduate in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in
Secondary Education: English and a minor in Reading. She is the wife of William Lorett
and the daughter of Carrie Nelson. Kristiny has been active on campus in many areas
including; ASMSUN Student Senate President, the Student Education Association, ReSPONSE
advisory board and as a member of the Montana Actors Theater to name a few of these
activities. A highlight of Kristiny's year has been the Student Senate's reopening
of the Pin and Cue in the basement of the SUB. Additionally, last fall she was elected
as the Montana Associated Students president. After her tenure at Northern, Kristiny
would like to continue on to graduate school and pursue a Masters degree in Education
with a focus on Leadership and/or Student Affairs.
Michael McPeak of Clarkston, Washington plans to graduate in May with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Biology. He is the son of Ernie and Robin McPeak of Clarkston. After graduation,
Mike plans on working in ministry here at Northern as an intern for Chi Alpha–Northern
Christian Fellowship. He has been an active student leader on campus as Resident Assistant,
Resident Director, a member of the wrestling team, a Student Support Services Tutor
and a vital part of Northern Christian Fellowship. Mike has been a two time NAIA Scholar
Athlete and a four time national qualifier. In 2007 he went on a mission trip to Slovaka,
Poland. Mike has also been a volunteer youth leader.
John Mitchell Jr of Box Elder, Montana will graduate in the Spring of 2009 with a Bachelor of Science
Degree in Business Technology and a minor in Small Business Management. He is the
son of Irene Mitchell also of Box Elder. John has been an active member of SIFE (Students
in Free Enterprise) serving as their IOC representative in addition to assisting with
a number of complex SIFE projects. One of these was a business ethics project at Stone
Child College. He has hosted a talk show on the college radio station KNMC. Outside
of Northern John has been a participant in the "We Are All Related" mural project
and is co-founder of the climbing toward youth group. A goal of John's is to manage
a supermarket.
Denise Pankratz of Lustre, Montana graduated in December of 2007 with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Elementary Education and a minor in English. She is the daughter of Wes and Jodie
Pankratz. Denise is currently teaching 1st grade in Glasgow. Prior to transferring
to Northern, Denise attended Flathead Valley Community College and was active in their
Student Senate and held the office of President. While attending Northern, she was
active in the Student Education Association and was an AmeriCorps member. Denise was
also a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of the Hi-Line. Denise graduated from
Northern with a 4.0 grade point average.
Andrew Pettersen of Everett, Washington will graduate in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Graphic Design and a minor in Business Technology. He is the son of Scott and Sue
Pettersen. Prior to attending Northern, Andrew attended Edmonds Community College.
Andrew has been a member of the Northern Lights basketball team the past two years
and helped lead the Lights to a share of the Frontier Conference championship. This
past year he was voted team co-captain for the 2007-08 year. During the 2006-07 season
Andrew was an Academic All-Conference selection. After graduating from Northern, Andrew
would like to move back to Seattle and join a web design studio and eventually own
a web design firm.
Shannon Walker of Floweree, Montana will earn an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing in May.
She is the spouse of James Walker. Upon graduation, Shannon plans to take her state
board exam and work in Hospice or Oncology. She also has thought of pursuing her BSN
degree. Shannon has spent the past 13 years working as a LPN with the last two years
at Missouri River Medical Center. As a nursing student in Great Falls, Shannon has
helped her classmates stay focused and helped them with their study habits.
